Yesterday Once More: The New Seiko 5 Sports Heritage References Bring Back the 60s and 70s

Watchmakers with storied histories have contributed significantly to the development of horology, introducing new technologies and refining techniques over time. This legacy of craftsmanship ensures a high level of quality and attention to detail in their watches. They often carry stories, whether it’s a watch worn by a famous personality or associated with a significant event or passed down through generations. One of the oldest brands in the world of horology, Seiko has thus delved into its archives and brought back two 1960s-inspired Heritage models, SRPL03 and SRPL05, limited to 9,999 pieces each.

The 1960s were a pivotal decade for the watch industry; it was characterised by significant technological advancements, iconic designs, and cultural influences. Seiko introduced the Seiko 5 series in 1963, which became known for its durability, automatic movement, day-date display, and affordable price. In 1969, Seiko introduced the Astron, the world’s first quartz wristwatch. This marked a significant shift from mechanical movements to electronic timekeeping, offering unprecedented accuracy.

To be precise, the design of the new watches draws inspiration from the 1968 Seiko 5 Sports 5126-8090 Kamen Rider model, which came in a 40 mm case. But of course the new collection has been upgraded with modern proportions and materials. Both stainless steel references now come in a case size of 38.5 mm with a short lug-to-lug measurement of 44.8 mm.

The rest is typical 5 Sports series, with a crown (barely visible) at 4 o'clock, a curved Hardlex mineral glass on top, a rotating bezel with a silver-toned (similar to the ‘68 novelty) metallic inlay, and black markings. The boxy form exudes a 1960s-1970s vibe that aficionados of the brand will certainly appreciate.

The dial is, once again, heavily inspired by the 1968 timepiece. SRPL03 features a silver dial, whereas SRPL05 has a black dial. Each gets a minute track and LumiBrite has been incorporated into the bezel, the hour, minute, second hands, and the baton hour markers. Both timepieces get red seconds hands and a black-background day-date window at 3 o’clock, along with a light blue Sports mention at 6 o’clock. 

The Seiko 5 Sports SRPL03 and SRPL05 references are powered by Calibre 4R36, an automatic movement offering 41 hours of power reserve. Each stainless steel screwed caseback sports the engraved “Limited Edition” and the serial number out of 9,999. Finishing each watch is a stainless steel bracelet; it’s closed by a three-fold clasp with push-button release. Also included in the box is a retro rally-styled black leather strap.
