Watches and Wonders 2024: Tudor's New Black Bay and Clair de Rose Iterations Released
Tudor has debuted three new Black Bay models and a Claire de Rose line at the ongoing Watches and Wonders Geneva event. Founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, Tudor is still a sister company to Rolex as both are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Let’s now examine the timepieces on offer in greater detail.
BLACK BAY 58 GMT
GMT watches typically have an additional hand that completes one rotation every 24 hours, in addition to the standard hour, minute, and sometimes second hands. This 24-hour hand points to a 24-hour scale on the bezel or the edge of the dial, allowing the wearer to read a second time zone. The new BLACK BAY 58 GMT (Ref.7939G1A0NRU) comes in a 39 mm stainless steel case with polished and satin finishes. The timepiece is certified by both COSC and METAS. There is a 24-hour bidirectional rotatable bezel in stainless steel with a black and burgundy anodised aluminium insert for the day-night functionality. The domed black dial has gilt applied hour markers.
There is a jumping hour at the centre, in addition to the 24-hour, minute, and seconds hands, and a date window at 3 o'clock without non-correction range. Powering the watch is Manufacture Calibre MT5450-U, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 65-hour power reserve certified by METAS. The timepiece has a bidirectional rotor system; it is finished on a 3-link “rivet-style” stainless steel bracelet with polished and satin finishes or on a rubber strap, all with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp.
BLACK BAY
Monochrome watches, which typically feature a design dominated by one colour or shades of a single colour, spell timeless elegance and simplicity. This minimalist approach to watch design focuses on form and function, often resulting in a watch that's both stylish and easy-to-read. A classic monochrome style often features a black strap, case, and dial with white numerals or indices — almost perfect for both casual and formal wear. The 41 mm stainless steel case with polished and satin finish of the new Black Bay (Ref. 7941A1A0NU) has a fully black-and-white appearance, without other colour or colour-coated accents.
At 3 o’clock is a stainless steel screw-down crown with the TUDOR rose in relief. The timepiece has a knurled unidirectional bezel, along with silver coloured Arabic hour markers. The black dial has angular ‘Snowflake’ hands and hour markers coated with Grade A Swiss Super-LumiNova® luminous material. Powering the watch is Manufacture Calibre MT5602-U, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 70-hour power reserve certified by METAS. The watch is finished on a 3-link or 5-link stainless steel bracelet with polished and satin finishes or on a rubber strap, all with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp.
BLACK BAY 58 18K
An 18 ct yellow gold watch is not just a timepiece but a statement of luxury and craftsmanship as well. The material is made by blending pure gold with copper, silver, and zinc to enhance the gold's strength and durability while maintaining its warm, rich colour. Satin finish can be spotted throughout the 39 mm 18 ct yellow gold case watch (Ref. 79018V). At 3 o’clock, there is a winding crown in 18 ct yellow gold with the TUDOR rose in relief, along with a circular satin-brushed 18 ct yellow gold winding crown tube.
The 60-minute unidirectional rotatable bezel in 18 ct yellow gold has a matte green anodised aluminium insert. The matte green domed dial has 18 ct gold applied hour markers and 18 ct yellow gold ‘Snowflake’ hands with Grade A Swiss Super-LumiNova®, a hallmark of Tudor divers’ watches, introduced in 1969. Powering the watch is the Manufacture Calibre MT5400, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 70-hour power reserve. Turning the watch over showcases the sapphire open caseback with a bidirectional rotor system. Finishing the watch is the 3-link 18 ct yellow gold bracelet with satin finish and an 18 ct yellow gold “T-fit” clasp.
CLAIR DE ROSE
When watchmakers design timepieces with 26 mm, 30 mm, and 34 mm diameters for women, they're catering to a diverse range of tastes and wrist sizes, ensuring that there's something for everyone. The size of a watch is an important factor as it affects not only the watch's appearance on the wrist but also its comfort and functionality. The newly unveiled collection comes in 26 mm (Ref. 35200), 30 mm (Ref. 35500), and 34 mm (Ref. 35800) stainless steel cases; it has a smooth stainless steel bezel as well. Both the case and the bezel have polished finishing.
Depending on the reference, the dials are either blue or opaline, with or without diamonds or even with full Roman numeral hour markers. All watches come with a centre hour, minute, and seconds hands, and a date window at 3 o’clock. Powering the 34 mm timepiece is Calibre T601, while the 26 mm and 30 mm versions are powered by Calibre T201. The power reserve for both movements spans 38 hours. Finishing each watch is the 5-link stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp and a safety catch.
