Flamingo Blue Fever: Presenting the Latest TUDOR Black Bay Chrono Variant
Brands frequently deploy distinctive and inventive names for dial colours to elicit emotion, pique curiosity, and leave a lasting impression on wearers. These names go beyond simple colour descriptors, incorporating a layer of storytelling that complements a brand's personality and product attractiveness. Instead of "blue", marketers may choose creative names, all of which evoke strong visuals and emotional associations. Flamingos are not blue, and last year’s TUDOR novelty, launched in collaboration with David Beckham's football team Inter Miami FC, was pink but was not named Flamingo. Now, the watchmaker has put forth yet another model, Black Bay Chrono Flamingo Blue (Ref. 79360N), in a vibrant blue hue, which evokes a traditional South Beach atmosphere.
TUDOR is not alone. In recent years, many watch brands have used blue and turquoise as dominant dial colours. Blue, which is generally linked with trust, refinement, and versatility, has become a popular colour for both casual and luxury timepieces. Turquoise, with its colourful and refreshing tones, has grown in popularity as a bold, modern alternative. Such colours do inspire a sense of tranquillity and connectedness to nature.
The latest TUDOR timepiece has a 41 mm stainless steel case, a TUDOR rose-signed crown at 3 o’clock, screwed chronograph pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, and bevelled lugs. There is a fixed bezel in stainless steel, inserted in black anodised aluminium with a tachymetric scale. The Flamingo Blue colour of the dial is a particular shade of blue, which is characteristic of the tropical waters that flamingos are known to adore.
The outer periphery of the dial has a black minute track; a black 45-minute subdial is at 3 o’clock, a date window rests at 6 o’clock, and a small 60-second subdial is found at 9 o’clock. Both subdials have a grey hand and spiral finish. There are eight dotted hour markers while 12 o’clock is represented by an inverted triangle. The dial also sports the signature angular “Snowflake” hands with Super-LumiNova® luminescent material. The chronograph seconds at the centre has a red arrow tip.
Powering the watch is a self-winding Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813, derived from the Chronograph Manufacture Calibre B01 from Breitling, certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with a silicon balance spring, a 70-hour power reserve, a column wheel construction, and a vertical clutch. The bidirectional rotor system is in tungsten monobloc, and is openwork and satin-brushed with sand-blasted details; the bridges and mainplate have alternating sand-blasted and polished surfaces with laser decorations. This new Black Bay Chrono model comes fitted on a 5-link stainless steel bracelet with a TUDOR “T-fit” rapid adjustment clasp, which also features a ceramic ball.
